Howell Public Schools provides a variety of learning options for eligible students with disabilities by offering a continuum of educational environments, from general education class placements with special services to pull-out programs in specialized classrooms. Special education programs and services are operated and administered in the local school buildings in collaboration with the Livingston Education Service Agency.
If staff members or parents believe a student is struggling academically, socially, or behaviorally, a referral should be made to the building-level Student Intervention Team through his/her general education teacher. The Student Intervention Team may develop an accommodation / intervention plan to support the student and exhaust general education measures and supports. After systematic data collection, the Student Intervention Team will gather again to discuss student progress and the effectiveness of these interventions. If necessary, they may recommend a special education evaluation. Then, the Special Education Evaluation Team determines whether referred students should be evaluated, and if so, in which suspected disability area(s).
Once a student is formally evaluated, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting is held. At this meeting, a determination will be made as to whether the student meets the eligibility criteria for special education programs and/or services. If so, the IEP Team determines the type and degree of required special education programs and/or services. Students and parents are provided due process procedural safeguards as outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Education Act (IDEA 2004).
If parents have any questions or concerns in relation to whether their Grade K-12 student may need special education support, they should contact their child’s general education teacher, the building principal, or the director of special education.
