Scholarships & Grants

As any student who has spent any time applying for scholarships can tell you, there are literally thousands out there, funded by businesses, foundations, and private citizens. The chances of getting one may range from slim to none.

That's why local scholarship resources are so important—because students see clearly that the community is invested in their education and future success. It's true at Howell Schools—more than $80,000 in local scholarships was awarded to the Class of 2016.

In the broad view, businesses award scholarships to create a better educated local workforce and more job opportunities within the community. With foundations and private citizens, the scholarship criteria tends to be much more specific. Some award scholarships for college-bound students, while others focus on helping students get advanced training for a skilled trade.

Grants

Companies, foundations, and individual donors make grants to support specific causes they believe in. In the case of McPherson Oil Company, which coordinates ExxonMobil's Educational Alliance Grants, the goal is to encourage students to pursue math and science careers.

The Howell Education Foundation makes grants to teachers, supporting projects that increase student motivation to learn and stimulate creativity in the classroom. Grants pay for project-related supplies or equipment, workshop fees, and teacher resources.

Grants to schools by private citizens are becoming more common to fill in the gaps as budget constraints force schools to scale back classes and programs.
