Howell Public Schools provides a strong academic focus for our students and school community.

HPS establishes high expectations for all students, both socially and academically. Our Vision is to Empower students to be successful citizens.

Students in grades K-12 follow Michigan Academic Standards

The District has established the timeline for instruction in these standards in the Scope and Sequence documents below. Teachers use these to plan in grade level or department teams to further map out their instruction.

HPS measures mastery of these standards through a balanced assessment process including formative, benchmark, and summative assessments. Teachers monitor student progress in class.

Elementary

Our elementary program has assigned periods of times for the core subjects of English, math, science and social studies, plus a menu of electives.

A typical elementary day includes one elective among Art, Music, Physical Education, or Technology. Elementary students experience all 4 electives throughout the course of the year.

Secondary

Both middle and high school schedules have assigned periods of time for each course.

In middle school, most electives go for a quarter (9 weeks), with Choir and Band being year-long electives and the Encore Support classes (Write On, Math Power Hour & Deciphering Science) scheduled as either quarterly, semester or year-long electives.

Some year-long middle school math (Algebra, Geometry) and world language courses count for high school credit and GPA.

Educational Development Plans (EDP)

The Michigan Department of Education mandates that all students begin an Educational Development Plan in grade 7. This plan acts as a guide to help students work with their parents and teachers in determining their career pathway. The EDP is developed online, using a program called Xello.

Student Support

Howell Public Schools uses a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for students. MTSS is a comprehensive framework comprised of a collection of research-based strategies designed to meet the individual needs and assets of the whole child at all achievement levels.

MTSS matches students’ instruction/support to the level and intensity of their needs. The levels of support provided to students are based on the increasing level of student needs, which is organized through a tiered framework:

• Tier 1 is whole class core instruction
• Tier 2 is whole class core instruction + additional targeted instruction (often small group)
• Tier 3 is whole class core instruction + additional targeted instruction + intensive intervention

Title I and At-Risk Services
Howell Public Schools offers Tier 2 support through Title I services for students in grades K-5 at three of our elementary schools: Challenger, Three Fires, and Southwest. We offer At-Risk support for students in grades K-5 at our remaining elementary schools: Hutchings, Northwest, and Voyager, as well as at each middle school and our high school.

Special Education Services
Special Education services are provided on a continuum of program/service options to meet the individual needs of students identified as having a disability under Michigan’s Administrative Rules for Special Education and/or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act for students in all grades. Special Education students are assisted in their educational efforts by social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, and speech and language therapists through the Livingston Educational Service Agency (LESA).
