MacGregor's Message 2/23/18

Dear Families,

Over the past ten days, news and images of another tragic incident at a school have taken over our news sources, televisions, and social media. As our country mourns the loss of 17 high school students and staff members, and we hear the accounts of the survivors, it does give us pause to think about the safety and security of our district, as there is nothing more important than ensuring that our students are safe while at school. I know that this is something on the minds of many of our families. Over the past several years the district has taken many steps to improve the safety and security of our schools, some of these are very visible, like the door buzzer systems installed on our main entrances. Others are less visible, like the trainings that members of our staff have attended. We are also committed to continuously improving school safety. To read more about our safety and security measures and some plans that we have to further improve this, please visit https://goo.gl/1kfPnj.

This summer we will be adding a new bus to our fleet. However, this will not be your ordinary yellow school bus that picks up students each day. Instead, it will be a literacy bus also known as a book bus. The book bus will travel around the district over the summer months bringing reading materials and fun to our students. There is a team of district staff members and students working on this initiative. We have high school students who are helping to design the inside of the bus, and next week we will be launching a naming contest with our elementary students. The overall goal of the book bus is to reduce the effect of the “summer slide.” As work progresses on this project, we will provide updates in future editions of MacGregor’s Message.

Next weekend, the Howell High School Performing Arts Department will present “The Addams Family Musical.” This creepy and kooky production is sure to be a family favorite. In the musical, the Addams Family children Wednesday and Pugsley are growing up and parents Gomez and Morticia must deal with the challenges of raising young adults. Shows are set for Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m. in the Rod Bushey Performing Arts Center. As a reminder, this year’s Kindergarten Registration Event will be held on Tuesday, March 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m. at each elementary school. New this year, you can save time at the registration event by registering your child online. Thanks to a recent Project Based Learning unit, Voyager fifth-grade students can now add toy designer to their resumes. Tonight, 21 of our middle school band students will perform with the Livingston County Middle School Honor Band and a Howell High School senior has advanced to the finalist stage in the National Merit Scholarship Program. I have shared more on each of these stories below.

Voyager Students Create New Toys

Voyager students look at the toys they designed.Fifth-grade students at Voyager recently designed toys as part of a Project Based Learning lesson. The students researched the history of toys and then worked in small groups to design their toy. With their toys designed, the fifth graders worked with students in Howell High School’s computer-aided design (CAD) class to have a 3D prototype of their toy printed. Howell High School Senior Advances in National Merit Scholarship Program

Miles Stevenson receives an award from Mr. SchrockI would like to congratulate Howell High School senior Miles Stevenson who has advanced to the finalist stage of the National Merit Scholarship Program. To advance, Miles had to complete a detailed application, write an essay, be endorsed by a school official, maintain a record of high academic performance and earn an SAT score that confirmed his performance on the PSAT.
