MacGregor's Message 1/12/18

Dear Parents

January is School Board Recognition Month, and I would like to take a moment to thank our school board members for their dedication to our district. The seven members of the board work tirelessly to advocate for our students, prepare for meetings, and ensure that Howell Public Schools is providing the best educational experience possible to our students. I am honored to work with a team of board members who always put the needs of our students first. If you see one of our board members at your child’s school or out in the community, please thank them for their service to our students.

Next Thursday, January 18 is my second Coffee Chat of the year and our first evening chat. After launching the Coffee Chat series last year, I heard from parents and stakeholders that they would like to attend, but that an evening or weekend time would be better. This chat will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. at Crosswinds Aviation located at 3808 W. Grand River, Howell. For more information, please visit, https://goo.gl/EjTPDL. I hope to see you next Thursday.

Last month, one of our middle school FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics teams, Team KAOS claimed the FTC State Championship as part of a three-team alliance. With this win, Team KAOS will now advance to the FTC Super Regional Competition in Iowa in March. Our other FTC team, Team KILTS also had an impressive showing at the state competition and advanced to the Super Regional event as well. Last weekend, our Competitive Cheer team took first place at the Frankenmuth Eagle Invitational. Additionally, several of our winter sports teams are currently in first or second place in their division. Lastly, the Howell High School Quiz Bowl team is currently in first place in the Tri-County League.

Recently, second-grade students in Ms. Sawyer’s class at Voyager Elementary held a Super Cool Science Show to showcase their science experiments and share the phenomenon behind the science. Videos from the Howell High School TEDx event held in November are now posted online, and kindergarten registration is approaching. You can read more on each of these stories below.

Please remember that in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we do not have school on Monday, January 15.

Save the Date: Kindergarten Registration is March 6

During the event, students and families will meet the school’s principal and kindergarten teachers, tour the school, and get to explore a school bus. Students registered on that day will also receive a special stuffed animal with their graduation year on it. I will share more information on this in an upcoming message.
