MacGregor's Message 11/12/2021
Dear Families,

Yesterday we celebrated Veterans Day. A Day to thank, celebrate, and honor all those who have served our country. Throughout our district, our students and staff learned and discussed the importance of this day. At Howell High School, our Junior ROTC cadets organized the school’s annual Veterans Day Assembly. This year’s program included a question and answer panel with local veterans. This was an incredible opportunity for our students to hear and learn directly from those who have served. To our alumni, staff, parents, grandparents, and community members who are veterans, we thank you for your service.

As we near the middle of our second card marking, we have opened up the enrollment window for Highlander Virtual for the second semester. If your child is currently enrolled in Highlander Virtual and you would like them to return to in-person learning, or if you would like to switch your child from in-person learning to Highlander Virtual, please complete the enrollment change application at https://bit.ly/3opZo8i by Wednesday, December 1 at 5 p.m. If you do not wish to change your child’s enrollment, you do not need to take any action. If you have questions about the enrollment change process, please contact the Highlander Virtual coordinator for your child’s level (Mr. Moore - elementary, Mrs. Gehringer - middle school & Mr. Stolle for high school).

The current weather forecast for this weekend includes snow showers. Deciding to close school due to weather is something we take very seriously, and we always have student and staff safety at the forefront when evaluating road and weather conditions. Please take a few moments to review our winter and severe weather process at https://bit.ly/3mRMPQC.

Like many school districts, businesses and organizations, we are dealing with staffing struggles. We currently have open positions for paraprofessionals, substitute teachers, child care staff, food service staff, athletic coaches, substitute bus drivers, and custodial staff. To view all of our open positions, please visit HowellSchools.com/jobs.

While COVID-19 cases had started to decline in recent weeks, we are now seeing an increase, especially in our lower grades. This is consistent with other schools in the county and our state. We must continue to follow good public health practices and work together to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our schools. One of the most important things we can do is to keep our children home when they are showing any signs of illness or if anyone in the child’s home has COVID-19 test results pending. The Livingston County Health Department and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services also strongly recommend that students wear a mask while attending school. I know the impact and inconvenience our mitigation efforts can have on families, and I thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Sincerely,
Erin J. MacGregor, Ed.S.
