Dear Families,
This week we have celebrated and honored our teachers and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week. In a year like no other, our teachers and staff have risen to the challenge of providing in-person and virtual learning to our students. They have taken on new responsibilities, implemented new learning management systems, and pivoted quickly as the various health department and state orders have changed. I could not be prouder of what we have accomplished this school year, and none of this would have been possible without the support of our teachers and staff. Please join me in thanking all of our outstanding teachers and staff for everything they do each day.
Last week, Howell High School held its annual Senior Survivor fundraiser. While adjustments had to be made to ensure that safety protocols could be followed, Senior Survivor Week was once again a huge success. The survivors raised more than $220,000 to help fund an inclusive playground at Genoa Park. This playground will allow students of all abilities to play together. As this school year comes to a close, I know many families are beginning to think about the next school year. We have started to receive questions about the school calendar for next year. The school calendar is an item that is negotiated between the district and the Howell Education Association (HEA) as part of the union contract. We have been meeting with the HEA and are very close to having a calendar for the next school year. As soon as both sides approve it, we will share the calendar with all families and post it on our website.
During my weekly check-in call with the Livingston County Health Department, they shared some encouraging news. The number of new COVID-19 cases in our area have been decreasing over the past week. They also shared that it is expected that the Federal Food and Drug Administration will approve the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children 12 years old and up next week. If this occurs, the health department plans to hold a special vaccination clinic targeting individuals 12 to 18 years old. Additionally, the vaccine is much more readily available, with several local pharmacies offering walk-in appointments.
Sincerely,
Erin J. MacGregor, Ed.S
