Dear Families,
Last week, we honored Mrs. Kim Hahn, a first-grade teacher at Three Fires Elementary, as the 2019-2020 Howell Public Schools Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Hahn is an incredible teacher who provides a caring and nurturing learning environment for all students. Additionally, she is an outstanding advocate for each student, Three Fires, and Howell Public Schools. We are so fortunate to have Mrs. Hahn working with our students. February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month. CTE programs prepare students for high-paying, high-demand careers. Students who enroll in CTE programs can earn articulated college credit and/or an industry credential that allows them to continue their education after high school or enter the workforce. In Howell, we offer several CTE programs, including a fire academy, manufacturing, engineering, and building trades. Additionally, students have access to a wide range of CTE programs in high schools around the county through the CTE consortium. As our high school students begin selecting their courses for next year, I would encourage you to speak to your child about the various CTE programs available to them.
We continue making progress on our planning for the bond projects scheduled this summer. We have received, and the Board of Education has approved, bids for the secure vestibules at each school, updated flooring in each school, new seating in the Rod Bushey Performing Arts Center, and new roofs at select buildings. Other items, such as enhancements to our athletic facilities, are currently out for bid. Work on these projects will begin immediately after the last day of school, which will limit access to our facilities throughout the summer. As plans are finalized, we will provide updates both in this newsletter and building newsletters.
Last week, staff and students from Innovation Academy had the honor of presenting at the State Board of Education meeting. My next Coffee Chat is set for Saturday, March 7. We are excited to welcome our incoming begindergarten and kindergarten students on Tuesday, March 17, at our begindergarten and kindergarten registration event. I have shared more on each of these items below.
Innovation Academy Staff and Students Present to State Board of Education
On Tuesday, February 11, students and staff from Innovation Academy attended the State Board of Education meeting to share the school’s unique approach to educating the whole student. This approach begins with meeting the students’ needs, such as ensuring that they have access to food, feel safe and cared for, and know they have value. With those needs met, students are ready to learn. To read more about the presentation, please visit http://bit.ly/2ufm42V.
Next Coffee Chat is Saturday, March 7
The next superintendent’s Coffee Chat is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, from 9 to 10 a.m. at Black Iron Coffee Roasters located at 119 W. Grand River in Downtown Howell. As always, there will be updates on district happenings and time for questions from district stakeholders. Additionally, there will be an in-depth look at the various ways that the district is working to educate the whole student through social and emotional learning and increased counseling support.
