MacGregor's Message 11/22/19
Dear Families,

Recently, Amy Kilgren, Highlander Way Middle School Family and Consumer Science Teacher was named the 2019 Family and Consumer Science Educators of Michigan (FCSEM) Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Kilgren teaches several Family and Consumer Science (FCS) courses that provide students with the information needed to make informed decisions about their wellbeing and equip students with life skills such as health management and wellness, food science and nutrition, and personal and family finance. We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Kilgren teaching our students. You can read more about this honor at http://bit.ly/2rVcuR5.

Two Howell High School students have been selected to participate in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) All-State Band. Sean Cleason and Drew Lacommare were selected through a blind audition process. Less than 5 percent of those who audition are selected for the All-State Band. The MSBOA All-State Band will perform at the Michigan Music Conference in January.

As you may have heard, Diamond Chrome Plating (DCP) on the corner of South Michigan Ave. and West Livingston Street is currently part of an investigation involving the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and the Livingston County Health Department regarding the release of Trichloroethylene (TCE) into the outdoor air. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. As such, we have been in contact with the Livingston County Health Department multiple times regarding this matter. They have assured us that there is no reason to believe that any of our schools are affected. In follow-up air quality testing that was conducted in the area around DCP, 10 came back non-detect for trichloroethylene (TCE) and nine came back with low amounts of TCE. A press release regarding the follow-up testing can be found at http://bit.ly/2s3QUKd. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact the Livingston County Health Department at 517.546.9850.

Last week, Highlander Way Middle School students completed a service project that ties in with Positivity Project and its motto of “Other People Matter.” The Parker Middle School choirs recently hosted their annual Madrigal Dinner. We will have a short week of school next week as we head into Thanksgiving Break. Classes will be held on Monday, November 25, and Tuesday, November 26. On Friday, November 29, several of our student groups will be participating in the annual Fantasy of Lights Parade. I hope you all have an enjoyable Thanksgiving.

Highlander Way Middle School Students Put Others First
A group of seventh-grade students at Highlander Way Middle School recently completed a service project that encompassed the Positivity Project’s motto of “Other People Matter.” The students took time to create blankets and fabric hearts that will be sent to the University of Michigan Motts Children’s Hospital and the Rogel Cancer Center. The students also wrote letters to first responders thanking them for their service to our community.

Parker Middle School Choirs Host Magical Madrigal Dinner
Recently, the Parker Middle School seventh and eighth-grade choirs hosted their annual Madrigal Dinner. A Madrigal Dinner is a re-creation of the Renaissance feasts held throughout England during the 16th century. At the dinner, the choir students performed a short pageant and sang holiday carols. The food for the evening was prepared by students in Howell High School’s culinary arts program.
