MacGregor's Message 5/17/19
Dear Families,

I would like to once again extend a big thank you to everyone who supported the bond proposal. On Monday night the Board of Education took action on three items related to the passage of the proposal. This included selecting an architect, selecting a construction management company, and authorizing the sale of the bonds. With these actions, we can begin to plan for the bond projects and implementation. As we move through this process, we will be revamping the bond information page on our website to provide updates on various activities relating to the bond work.

On Wednesday, we hosted the second annual Highlander Warrior Awards. We created this program last year as a way to honor students who have shown great strength, courage, and perseverance in the face of adversity. It was inspiring to hear how our students have overcome various challenges to find success.

At the end of March, a new law regarding cyberbullying took effect in Michigan. Under the law, if someone is convicted of online harassment, they may face up to 93 days in jail, and a fine of up to $500 for a first offense. While our district policy has addressed cyberbullying for several years, and we have worked to educate students about online safety and the responsible use of the internet, we felt that this law going into effect created a natural opportunity to reinforce those messages and educate students about the new law. To do this, our outstanding school resource officers, Officer Banfield and Deputy Schuster, teamed with Livingston County Prosecutor Mr. Vailliencourt to create a presentation for our middle school students. They will now revamp their presentation to share this important information with our fifth-grade students.

With summer quickly approaching, we are finalizing the weekly schedule for our literacy bus, The Highlander Reading Express. Once again, The Highlander Reading Express will be out every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday over the summer. It will also be at several special events around our community. We have added many new books to the collection and have a few surprises planned to help promote summer reading. When we finalize the schedule, it will be posted on our website, Facebook, and shared in our school to home communications.

Speaking of the summer, The Salvation Army has released the schedule for this year’s Summer Lunch Bunch. This is a wonderful program that supports those in need in our community over the summer months. The program will run June 17 through August 16, with several locations throughout Livingston County. On Friday, May 31 we will host our first ever Elementary Student Showcase event. This summer, several Howell Public Schools athletics programs will host skills camps for students of all ages. Even though the school year is ending, our students will still have access to many online resources from the Howell Carnegie District Library.

Howell Elementary Student Showcase
On Friday, May 31 we will host our first Elementary Student Showcase from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Howell High School. The student showcase will provide elementary students in third through fifth grade an opportunity to share a project they have completed in class and are proud to display for the community to see.

Howell Athletic Camps
This summer, many of our athletic programs will offer summer camp programs for students of all ages. These fun and informative programs are an excellent way for children to explore new sports or to strengthen their skills in a sport that they currently play. To learn more about the camps or to register for one, please visit https://tinyurl.com/y46j8gkw.

Online Resources from the Howell Carnegie District Library
Through our partnership with the Howell Carnegie District Library, our students have access to several free online resources using their student ID number as their library barcode number and 1234 as the default PIN. Students can access thousands of e-books, research databases, and Tutor.com allows students to connect with a live tutor in more than 40 subjects, including Math, Science, and English. These great resources will be available over the summer as well. To learn more about these resources, please visit https://tinyurl.com/yyneb7f2.
